Alex Bower sadly died on 18.07.2020, aged 73 years.

Alex’s funeral service is due to take place at 2.20pm on the 31st of July at Stonefall Crematorium, Wetherby Road, Harrogate, HG3 1DE.

Below is a statement in memory of Alex from the Journal of Pharmacy Management 

“It is with a profound and deep sense of sadness that we have to announce the death of Alex Bower after a short illness.

Alex was involved in the original meeting for the creation of the Journal of Pharmacy Management in 1985 and maintained close links with PM throughout his stellar career in the NHS in both England and Wales. That career saw Alex go from being a Senior Pharmacist in an Acute Trust in England to a Chief Administrative Pharmaceutical Officer (CAPO) in West Wales and then to Yorkshire to become the Regional Pharmaceutical Officer – based in Harrogate.

He finished his career at a Leeds PCT and joined PM as the Editor of the Journal of Pharmacy Management in 2002.

Many Pharmacists who are now in senior positions in the NHS will be able to attest to the remarkable qualities that Alex brought to bear on any interaction with colleagues. A man with the most genuine of feelings for his fellow pharmacists and who always achieved he highest of professional standards within his work.

His skills were many and varied. Not only was he an outstanding Editor of our publications but he was an excellent facilitator and chairperson of meetings, plus he project managed the first Celtic Conference in Edinburgh in March 2019.

But perhaps most of all……….

Throughout his career he provided the most open and constructive approach to any issue or problem – a great positive thinker and permanent supporter of colleagues whether they were in the NHS or at Pharmacy Management.

The world of today needs more people with the qualities of Alex Bower and in due course there will be further information as to how to PM will be honouring and remembering Alex in a permanent manner.

Finally, we send our condolences and thoughts to the Bower family who have supported Alex and allowed us at PM to experience working with such a unique and special human being.”
