What is a Direct Cremation?
Direct Cremation has received much press coverage over the last few years but unfortunately people do not always mean the same thing when they are referring to it (or reporting on it) which has led to some confusion.
A Direct Cremation means that someone who has died is cremated without a service and without people in attendance. It is a very simple way to safely and gently make arrangements after someone has died when a full funeral is not felt to be required or appropriate. In its simplest form, a Direct Cremation does not include a memorial ceremony or alternative celebration, but in reality many people do choose to arrange an event of some sort where people come together to reflect on the life and death of the person who has died.
If you have chosen a Direct Cremation then the person who has died will be brought into the funeral director’s care until the time that they are brought to the crematorium. You will need to meet with the funeral director to complete some statutory cremation paperwork but this meeting can be relatively short, if that is what you would prefer.
When you choose Direct Cremation this does not include the opportunity to spend time with the person who has died. We believe that this time might be very important and therefore also have the option of a Direct Cremation with Visits (please see below). Furthermore, with your permission we will still offer to discuss some simple options for memory making with you but please don’t hesitate to let us know if you would rather that we do not do so. Alternatively you might find some of the information about continuing bonds helpful.

Sometimes people may think that a Direct Cremation is the right decision for their circumstances, but feel that there are some small additions that they would like to make in order to make it meaningful for them. For such situations we can offer an enhancement to the Direct Cremation service that will include:
Facilitating any visits of the person that has died within working hours, including use of our visiting room
Supporting the client to personalise decisions that are made
Facilitating any special arrangements on the morning of the cremation (though this cannot involve anyone being present at the cremation)
