CarbonSmart – Carbon Literacy Training
Carbon Literacy is an awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.
We have been accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project to deliver this one day course. It is designed to be relevant to individuals, small businesses (with less than ten people in the team) and those working in a voluntary sector organisation.
Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate from The Carbon Literacy Project to confirm that you are a Carbon Literate Citizen.
Who is this for?
This workshop is for anyone who wants to better understand carbon dioxide and the impact of human activities.
The course focusses on understanding what we can do to reduce our emissions and how we can motivate ourselves and others to take action.
This workshop is for people who would like attend as individuals (members of the public), representatives from small / micro-businesses (with less than ten employees) or who work in the voluntary sector.
What does it cost?
Open access Carbon Literacy Courses usually cost around £150 to attend. We have designed this course to be accessible to those people living in Leeds, Harrogate, Aireborough, Wharfedale and Altrincham who would like to become carbon literate citizens, but for whom that cost is too big a barrier to attend.
We have committed to do this to have a positive impact on the communities in which our services are based and for those who meet the criteria we can offer the course for £25 each (to cover the costs of the certificate).
If you do not meet the criteria then we may be able to offer you a place on our courses but this will incur a charge of £125.
What is covered?
The course considers:
- What are greenhouse gases
- What is the impact of greenhouse gases on our climate
- What evidence is there that human activities are impacting on the climate
- What are the likely consequences of the current climate trends
- What can we do about it
- Good practice and inspirational examples from Yorkshire and beyond
- How we can motivate ourselves and others to reduce our carbon
Please note that to complete the course (and become a carbon literate citizen) you will need to complete a written pledge at the end of the course. This will be sent to The Carbon Literacy Project and when approved, your certificate will be issued.
How is it delivered?
We offer Carbon Literacy Training as in-person and online courses.
The course requires 8 hours of learning – some courses take place over one full day and others take place over two half-day sessions during the same week.
The course will only go ahead if 8 people confirm their attendance. If you would like to invite us to complete the training to a group of 8 people then please get in touch and we will arrange a separate training date for you.
How do I book?
Open courses are available to book via our Eventbrite page (where you will also find other courses and events that we offer). Please get in touch if you can’t find what you are looking for.
To discuss the training and to arrange your own training for eight people or more in person or online please contact us, or email [email protected].
What qualifies us to run this course?
We have always cared about our impact on the environment. This lead us to become the first UK funeral director to become a certified B Corp and to win a number of sustainability awards.
In 2024 we decided to engage with the Carbon Literacy Project to create a Carbon Literacy Course for local people who might not otherwise have access to such training.
The CLP have checked the course content and delivery methods carefully and approved this course. That means you can have the confidence that the course has been validated by experts.
