We make a difficult time easier

We tried many things, but Carbon Literacy was the “difference that made the difference”

Where it all began

Full Circle Funerals became the first UK funeral director to achieve certified B Corp status in 2021, and we were proud to be recertified in 2025. Being a B Corp means we hold ourselves accountable to high standards of social and environmental impact, transparency and governance.

We had already been doing practical things to reduce Carbon as much as possible. But we also knew this: progress only really accelerates when people have the knowledge and confidence to act.

That’s what brought us to Carbon Literacy.

Attending Carbon Literacy Training in January 2024

In January 2024, I attended an open Carbon Literacy Course with Lighthouse Training. It turned out to be a complete game changer.

The course reinforced that while values and intent matter, knowledge is essential. It enables people to understand the “why” and make informed choices without feeling overwhelmed. It was positive and action focussed and I learnt that there is evidence that Carbon Literate Citizens emit 1 tonne less Carbon per year after their training – that is real impact.

Developing Carbon Literacy courses and becoming a Carbon Literate team.

Afterwards, one thing became clear: funeral care needed this but funeral-specific Carbon Literacy training didn’t exist. So we decided to create it.

We developed Funeralcare Carbon Literacy Training (CLT) to support funeral professionals, celebrants and sector leaders with Carbon Literacy grounded in the reality of funeral care.

We also decided to create a Carbon Literacy Course for small organisations and individuals because we wanted to be able to offer this to people in our community who might not be able to become Carbon Literate Citizens otherwise.

We developed both courses during October 2024 and within a year of attending the Lighthouse Carbon Literacy Training we had two Carbon Literacy Courses accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project and 100% of the Full Circle Funerals team were Carbon Literate.

Since October 2024 we have been delivering acredited Carbon Literacy Training to professional working in Funeralcare. This has included celebrants, funeral directors, bereavement specialists and members of national trade associations.

Sarah has dlivered courses to teams at membership associations and larger independent funeral directors and is now supporting industry bodies to create Carbon Literacy training for their organisations – which will really accelerate Carbon Literacy in Funeralcare.

If you are working in Funeralcare and would like to become Carbon Literate then get in touch – we can support you from attending your first training to developing and delivering your own course.

We have been offering Carbon Literacy training to Yorkshire people and organisations since October 2024. A huge variety of people have attended and the pledges have been inspiring – thoughtful actions, grounded in real life, often with ripple effects into families, workplaces and local networks.

We first partnered with Zero Carbon Harrogate to deliver Carbon Literacy Training in June 2025 and we are proud to continue to do so. This allows us to support an impactful grass-roots climate charity and create more Carbon Literate Citizens together.

We hope to partner with more local charities in 2026.

2026 and beyond

Having seen the value of Carbon Literacy — and the way The Carbon Literacy Project commits to its strong and clear purpose — Full Circle Funerals is now hoping to achieve Silver Carbon Literate Organisation status in the coming months.

We are looking forward to continuing to work with local grassroots climate charities to support more people in Yorkshire to become Carbon Literate and really, really hope that we can be part of the change that we need to see in funeral care so that it becomes a more sustainable industry.
